Mini-Mission 1: Advocating and Implementing Project Based Learning

Day 1 (Tuesday) November 9, 2010
TIME: 4:05 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

GOAL:
Participants will gain a better understanding of the elements of project-based learning and its effectiveness as a methodology.

Reflect on what you have learned about the structure, components, and rationale for project based learning and complete this mission:


You and your fellow coaches have landed on the planet Antique to gather gidgetbytes to fuel your ship so you can continue your mission. The Antiquans were caught in an Einsteinian time warp that slowed them down so that they were constantly preparing for the years that had already passed. You develop a conversation with several of their teachers (math, social studies, science, Antiquan language arts) and you unwittingly mention project based learning (thus violating the prime directive of not interfering with resident cultures!). They will not release the necessary gidgetbytes to you unless you

  1. Provide a rational for why PBL will be more successful methodology than conventional means of lecture and large class discussion.
  2. Provide possible PBL projects for each of the subjects taught: math, social studies, science and Antiquan language arts.
  3. Provide either a short jingle to help the Antiquans remember project based learning or an illustration that would help the Antiquans remember project based learning.
