Listservs

What is the listserv?

A listserv is a mailing list. (Actually, the word listserv is a specific software application. Like Kleenex is a specific brand of tissue.) It distributes emails to all the members of a list.

The CFF program has a mailinglist for the coaches, one for each of the four core subject areas, and one each for Superintendents, Principals, Tech Directors, and Curriculum Directors. By FAR, the one for the coaches is the most active.

How do I join a listserv?

Listservs are controlled by a software application called a 'bot', for 'robot.' Commands sent to the bot are carried out by the software. So, to join a list,
  • Send an email (from the address that you wish to use for the list), to: listserv@mailinglist.caiu.org
  • The Subject is ignored by the bot
  • In the body, put: subscribe cffcoaches YourFirstName YourLastName
    • ex: Subscribe cffcoaches Noah Lott
  • You'll receive an email confirmation

How do I post to a listserv?

To send a message to everyone on the list,
  • Send the email to the name of the list itself (NOT to the listserv bot)
  • Include a meaningful Subject, as it will be read (or deleted) by the members of the list based on that subject line
    • Example: "Looking for research to support blogging" - Everyone will know what the message is about
    • Bad example: "Help!" - We're all busy and we're not likely to bother opening the email to find out what the cry for help is all about.

How do I sign off from a listserv?

  • Send an email to the bot again (listserv@mailinglist.caiu.org)
  • In the body, put: signoff cffcoaches
  • No need to include your name this time

Are there other mailinglists?

Yes:
Cffenglish@mailinglist.caiu.org
Cffmath@mailinglist.caiu.org
Cffscience@mailinglist.caiu.org
Cffsocialstudies@mailinglist.caiu.org
Cfftech@mailinglist.caiu.org
Join them the same way by sending an email to the listserv and subscribing

How do I search the archives?

Visit and log in: http://mailinglist.caiu.org
Click the Search Archives
At a minimum, enter a keyword into the String field and click Search.
Here is a sample search for all conversations containing the word Facebook. You must be logged in to see this search result.

The Coaches Moodle

What's on the Moodle?

What isn't? Everything from coach-created materials, to ... TONS of resources that we've created and collected over the years. Please excuse the clutter, but there's just so much in there that it became impossible to manage neatly

How do I create an account there?

Visit cffcoach.org
In the login box, click the link to Create an Account and complete the form

Webinars

What are webinars and how do I join one?

Webinars are live online sessions conducted from time to time using Elluminate. They are free to coaches and teachers, and the subjects vary. If you're interested in learning more about a given topic, send your suggestion to your TIM or Mentor and a webinar can probably be arranged. Emails are sent out via the coach mailinglist to alert coaches of the dates, times, and means to participate. Elluminate sessions require a download to run.

Where can I listen to past webinars?

Visit http://vclass.cciu.org and click the Recordings tab in the top left corner. Enter at least part of the title of the webinar for the search. Use the calendar on the right to narrow down a search period if you know it. Or, click the link for "This Year" to search the calendar year to date.

The Diigo Group

What is it?

Diigo is a free social bookmarking service. Many of our coaches use Diigo to post their bookmarks, tagged with appropriate labels so that we can find them easily. For example, here is a page that lists sites tagged with the word "socialstudies."

Where do I go to join?

Once you have created an account, go here to find the group and to join it. You will then be able to follow the new sites that our coaches are finding, as well as filter through the list for sites we've already posted. You can be sure that someone has found some good content there.

Challenge-Based Learning

What is it?

From the website:
"Challenge Based Learning is an engaging multidisciplinary approach to teaching and learning that encourages students to leverage the technology they use in their daily lives to solve real-world problems. Challenge Based Learning is collaborative and hands-on, asking students to work with other students, their teachers, and experts in their communities and around the world to develop deeper knowledge of the subjects students are studying, accept and solve challenges, take action, share their experience, and enter into a global discussion about important issues."

Where can I learn more about it?

The website is here. The Voices page is especially helpful.
This Resources page has a LOT of information about it. Download the PDF's, for example.
